CULTURAL INDUSTRIES BY SEX AND AGE

OVERVIEW

Of those employed in Western Australia in the week prior to the 2011 Census, 29,573 (3%) persons reported their main occupation in a cultural industry. Of those employed in a cultural industry, 15,260 (52%) were employed in a non-cultural occupation.

The cultural industries that employed the most persons were architectural services (3,722), newspaper publishing (2,596), religious services (2,561), newspaper and book retailing (2,526) and printing (2,231).

Of all persons employed in cultural industries in Australia, 8% resided in Western Australia. The cultural industry with the highest proportion of persons employed in Western Australia compared with Australia was music and other sound recording activities (14%). By comparison, only 2% of persons employed in motion picture and video distribution and reproduction of recorded media lived in Western Australia.

EMPLOYMENT BY SEX

Interestingly, more females (15,259) than males (14,314) were employed in cultural industries in Western Australia, which was not the case nationally.

Cultural industries employing the highest proportions of males were cable and other subscription broadcasting (79%), post-production services and other motion picture and video activities (78%) and reproduction of recorded media (74%).

Cultural industries employing the highest proportions of females were libraries and archives (81%), arts education (76%), and newspaper and book retailing (68%).

EMPLOYMENT BY AGE

Persons aged 15 to 24 years made up 18% of all persons employed in cultural industries in Western Australia. Cultural industries with the largest number of persons employed aged 15 to 24 years were newspaper and book retailing (786), motion picture exhibition (741), video and other electronic media rental (523), newspaper publishing (439) and arts education (401).

The cultural industry with the largest proportion of persons aged 15 to 24 years was motion picture exhibition (73%). Only 5% of persons employed in funeral, crematorium and cemetery services were aged 15 to 24 years.

Persons aged 55 years and over made up 20% of all persons employed in cultural industries in Western Australia The cultural industries with the most persons aged 55 years and over were religious services (882) architectural services (726), newspaper publishing (587), newspaper and book retailing (584) and printing (498).

The cultural industry with the largest proportion of persons employed aged 55 years and over was religious services (35%). In contrast, motion picture exhibition accounted for 5% of all persons aged 55 years and over employed in cultural industries in Western Australia for their main job.
